I still have boxes of clothing I haven’t unpacked since we moved here. My daily clothing routine begins with a plaid shirt with old jeans and ends at anything clean…My demands are minimal. I assumed my friends here are the same..Except AW of course who always dresses beautifully and somehow pulls of an island chic flair to her casual clothes.
Our daughter worked her last social work practicum this fall at a drop in centre for women in the street based sex trade. She told us there was a huge need at the shelter for warm clothes, toiletries, towels, bedding and fancy clothes for work. One of her roles at the shelter was working in the makeup room where they also handed out the donated clothing.
Thanksgiving was approaching and I thought she could take donations off the island. I asked my friends if they were like me with unused supplies cluttering their limited space. and did they??? Bags and Bags began to arrive at our house. Shoes, sweaters, dresses, toiletries, bedding, towels, makeup and lotions. The wife of a retired dentist brought a huge box of toothpaste samples. There was far too much for my daughter to carry on the ferry home as a walk on. She was able to handle a knapsack full and that was about it. .. So it has been piled in the corner of our bedroom for the last two months…
This morning I had more than enough donations to fill two hockey bags and then some.. Not bad for a few women living on a remote island in the middle of nowhere. E and I will take it all with us next week in the car when we go to Vancouver for Christmas. We will drop it off at the centre on Boxing Day.

I think sharing your used items with others is a good thing for all involved. People need to help one another more without strings attached. Just plain goodness. No reward other than knowing you did a good thing. for another person.

Sometimes people just don’t know where to take it all…
When my daughter was volunteering at the SPCA in high school we discovered they are always in need of old towels.. I am sure I had thrown out ripped stained towels in my life …. Now I know where I can take them…. Thanks for following along… 🙂

We have a recycle box on our island I have seen more than a few items go through the bin several times. Bottom line: what works. Line no longer considered: fashion. Marketing line: priceless.

Agreed.. Nothing goes to waste on this island.. There is a sofa bed that I understand is on its fourth house…It was nice to have a place to send all our fancy clothes… this time… not much need for sequins… any more.. 🙂
