on the mend

Before we go any further, allow me to remind you all of a few things. I live off grid on an island with no bathtub. We don’t use appliances which require instant heat as it will damage our inverter system (ie. hair dryers and flat irons). We are currently in a drought situation on our property with empty tanks and limited access to more. It’s E’s birthday, I am essentially cheap, selfish and my Mother at 93, is in the hospital recovering from a stroke. She has her Masters degree in English.

Last night I put a very low bid on a hotel room on Priceline.com for one night (tonight) as a gift for a treat for  a long week   E’s birthday. In order to get a room at the rate I was willing to pay we are a very long way from where we started. In fact there was one if not two-time zone changes. E had to drive an hour after he picked me up at 6 pm.

When I eat at a restaurant I normally have a spinach salad. It is my standard order and I consider myself quite the spinach salad connoisseur if there is such a thing. I thought I had had one of the best two weeks ago in Coombs with the ladies. But tonight let me tell you kids.. The best spinach salad, bar none, in my vast expanse of experience is on the new White Spot BC Menu…. It is to die for.. I didn’t want it to end… It was gorgeous.. Filled with fresh local blueberries, strawberries, goat cheese and candied smoked salmon… Every fork full a blend of nummy…. I even took the time to request a customer satisfaction card. (which I NEVER do)….

With a happy tummy I sank into the hot steaming over flowing soaker tub (with arm rests) in our room,  to wash away the memory of the hospital. Lady in the bed beside my Mother is near the end, her family sitting around her singing “Shall we gather by the river”….. Honestly, is there no private room available for these poor people?  After soaking in the tub, I cranked up that hair dryer and blew my long white locks into steaming straight rows…….  Good Lord, I am fed, clean and dry… Its been two years since I have been all three at once…

Most, if not all of you have had a Mother at some point in your life, and will understand that I share the next update with only love in my heart. When I arrived on Monday at the hospital Mom took the time to share her thoughts on this blog…

Mother… “It’s very well written dear, don’t get me wrong but it is time, you learned the subtle difference between the two words lay and lie. Your readers will find your mistakes hard to miss.. Grammar, you know, jumps out from the page and I am sure they have noticed.. It doesn’t take much time to reread the grammatical rules for their use.”

At that point, I knew she was

  3. Your Mom wasn’t a grammar school teacher in Liverpool by chance? She sounds like one I used to have. Great to hear she’s on the mend.
